Movers Streatham Health and Safety Policy
Movers Streatham is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our removals and related services. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with moving, handling, transportation and storage of personal and commercial belongings.
Policy Aims and Scope
The purpose of this policy is to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property by identifying hazards and applying effective control measures. It applies to all activities undertaken by Movers Streatham, including domestic and commercial moves, packing and unpacking services, loading and unloading vehicles, furniture assembly and temporary storage operations.
All employees, whether permanent, temporary or agency, and all contractors working on our behalf are required to follow this policy and any related procedures, instructions or risk assessments relevant to their work.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Movers Streatham has overall responsibility for ensuring that appropriate arrangements are in place to manage health and safety. This includes setting objectives, allocating resources and reviewing performance on a regular basis.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy within their areas of control. They must ensure that:
Employees are properly instructed and supervised in safe working methods; suitable and sufficient risk assessments are carried out for all relevant tasks; necessary equipment, tools and vehicles are maintained in safe working order; any incidents, near misses or hazards are reported, investigated and addressed; and health and safety considerations are included in operational planning and decision making.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Movers Streatham has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must:
Follow all safety procedures, instructions and training provided; use equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly; report hazards, unsafe conditions, incidents and near misses promptly to a supervisor; cooperate with management on all matters relating to health and safety; and avoid taking unnecessary risks or shortcuts that may endanger themselves or others.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Movers Streatham will conduct and regularly review risk assessments for typical moving and handling tasks, including lifting and carrying of heavy items, use of trolleys and lifting aids, vehicle loading, working in customers premises and working in shared or public areas.
From these assessments we will develop safe systems of work and method statements, covering:
Planning of moves and allocation of suitable staff and equipment; safe routes for carrying and transporting items; protection of property, fixtures and fittings; control measures to prevent trips, slips and falls; and steps to manage interaction with customers, neighbours and the public.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a significant part of our operations and is a key focus of our health and safety management. Movers Streatham will minimise manual handling risks by using mechanical aids where reasonably practicable and by ensuring that:
Staff receive training in safe lifting and carrying techniques; loads are assessed before being moved and split into smaller loads where possible; team lifting is used for heavy or awkward items; and suitable equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, lifting straps and ramps is provided and maintained.
Employees must inspect equipment before use, not use any defective equipment, and report damage immediately. Only authorised and trained staff may operate specialised equipment.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Movers Streatham is committed to the safe operation of all vehicles used for removals and related services. We will ensure that:
Vehicles are regularly serviced, inspected and maintained; loads are properly distributed and secured to prevent movement in transit; drivers hold the appropriate licence and are competent for the vehicles they operate; and drivers follow road traffic laws, speed limits and driving hours requirements.
Drivers and crew must perform basic vehicle checks, report defects immediately and not drive any vehicle they believe to be unsafe. No one must drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair their ability to drive safely.
Working In Customers Premises
Our teams frequently work in private homes, offices and shared buildings. To protect customers, their property and our staff, Movers Streatham will:
Plan access routes and identify potential hazards before work begins; use floor protection, corner guards and other measures to reduce the risk of damage; keep work areas as tidy and free from obstructions as reasonably possible; and ensure that tools and equipment are used safely and are not left unattended where they may cause harm.
Customers are asked to inform us in advance of any access difficulties, structural issues, fragile surfaces or particular hazards on the premises, so that these can be taken into account in our planning and risk control.
Training, Information and Supervision
Movers Streatham will provide appropriate health and safety training for all employees, relevant to their role and responsibilities. This may include induction training, manual handling, use of equipment, working at height where applicable, safe driving and emergency procedures.
Refresher training will be provided as needed, and whenever there are significant changes in working practices or equipment. Supervisors are responsible for monitoring work on site and providing guidance to ensure procedures are followed.
Accidents, Incidents and First Aid
All work-related accidents, injuries, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported as soon as practicable. Movers Streatham will record and investigate incidents to identify causes and implement improvements.
Suitable first aid arrangements will be provided, including access to first aid kits and trained persons where required. Employees must cooperate with any investigation and use the findings to improve safety practices.
Consultation and Policy Review
Movers Streatham encourages open communication on health and safety matters. Employees are invited to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safe working methods.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly, and at least annually, or sooner if there are significant changes to our operations, legislation or recognised best practice. Any updates will be communicated to all employees and implemented across the business.
By working together and following this policy, Movers Streatham aims to deliver a professional removals service while protecting the wellbeing of our staff, customers and the wider community.
